What porting does for a pistol
· First published on GunCuts.com

Porting means cutting small holes through the top of the barrel so part of the gas behind the bullet vents upward on its way out. It changes how the pistol moves when it fires, in three ways.
Less recoil
Gas that leaves through the ports isn't pushing the gun back into your hand. Less push means the sights settle sooner, so your next shot comes faster and lands closer.
Less muzzle flip
The vented gas also pushes the muzzle down, against its usual rise. A flatter muzzle is another reason follow-up shots get quicker.
Better control
Put those together and the pistol is easier to keep on target through a string of shots.
